Rain in the Forecast? Don’t Let Weather Wreck Your Striping

Illustration of a parking lot stripe and striping machine between stormy rain clouds and sunny weather.

A dry-looking parking lot can still be the wrong place to paint. For Houston property managers, rain, humidity and pavement temperature can turn a convenient striping appointment into a costly do-over. Solvent-based paint still needs the right conditions.

Solvent-based does not mean weatherproof

Some solvent-based traffic paints suit cooler conditions where certain waterborne products cannot be used, as PPG explains. That advantage is product-specific. It does not make wet pavement acceptable or give every solvent-based paint the same application window.

Humidity: the number behind the forecast

Humidity matters even when rain is absent. Sherwin-Williams’ SETFAST Acrylic Solvent Based Zone Marking Paint data sheet specifies a maximum 85% relative humidity, temperatures at least 5°F above dew point, and an application range of 40–110°F for air, surface and material. These are limits for TM5632/TM5645, not universal rules.

Dew point is the temperature at which moisture can condense. A clear evening or early start still deserves a surface check. Ask the contractor to measure conditions at the lot and follow the current sheet for the exact paint being used.

Rain stopped? Check the pavement first

The same SETFAST sheet prohibits painting wet surfaces, immediately after rain or during fog. It requires a clean, dry, sound surface. Rain ending is not proof that the pavement is ready. Check shaded spaces, low areas, recent pressure washing and irrigation before planning a restart.

Look ahead, too. Ask how much rain-free time the selected product needs after application. If the forecast cannot support that window, rescheduling is a sensible way to protect the work. There is no single rain-safe waiting period for every solvent-based striping paint.

Hot pavement and quick-dry claims need caution

Sun can make asphalt hotter than the surrounding air, so a phone’s temperature reading is not enough. Fox Valley Paint’s temperature guide warns that excessive heat can dry paint too quickly and affect adhesion. Use the selected product’s limits, not a one-size-fits-all temperature rule.

SETFAST also says drying depends on temperature, humidity and film thickness. A laboratory dry-to-touch or no-pickup result should not become an automatic reopening promise. Agree on who checks the markings and authorizes traffic before cones come down.

Give your Houston lot a better weather plan

Before the crew arrives, share operating hours, delivery routes, sprinkler schedules and areas that stay damp. Discuss a weather backup and how sections can close without blocking essential access. A well-planned delay beats paying to redo rushed lines.
